How to Set Up a Minecraft Server

Setting up a server might seem daunting to scary, but with these easy-to-follow instructions, it’s a snap!

1. Download the Minecraft server .zip file and extract it to your desktop.

2. Go to your desktop and open the minecraft-server folder.

3. Now you’ll see a bunch of files. There should be 2 files called server. Open one of them. If you can’t open the file, select ‘Notepad’ from the window that pops up. If this file is blank, open the other server file.

4. Find the line that says port=xxx, which is normally set to 25565. Go to here and find your router model for a step-by-step guide to forward the port. If you do not forward the port, others will not be able to join your server.

Name Your Server and Set Message of the Day

5. To name your server, change the name after server-name=. This is what will appear on the public server list.

To change the Message of the Day, change the text after motd=. This is what will appear when players connect to your server.

To change the amount of players allowed, change the number after max-players=. This number is how many players (including you) can be in the server at one time.

6. Save and close the server file. Noe open the admins file. Add your in-game name to this so that you can be an admin and have special abilities to kick players and so forth. You need to one one admin per line.

7. If you want to ban any IP addresses, copy and paste them into the banned-ip file. Banned IPs must have a / before each entry. For banlists, each name or IP must be on its own line. Save and close the banned and banned-ip files.

8. Click start server to launch the server. A black command window should pop up, and soon it should display information such as the external URL. Once it shows the external URL, you can join your server through the URL in the command window (or the externalurl file) or by clicking it in the public server list.

9. To close your server, simply exit out of the black command window. The map is saved automatically, so you don’t need to use the save button in the in-game menu.

Updating Your Server

After an update, you should update your server to the latest version. Go back and download the Minecraft server .zip file and extract it. Then drag and drop the minecraft-server and server files (don’t drag and drop the chat log file) into your folder. You’ll have to update the name of your server and message of the day again.

Uhh…that site you link basically always tells you that you can’t host anything, what a crock. I even put that my up and down speeds were 100 and i have 50gbs of ram and it told me i couldn’t host a server…scam…don’t buy it…

How grateful would you be? Alright we are currently looking for 1, just 1 more player to join the Shadow of Israphel series. You will be following us everywhere, and be a major part in the story, if your interested Xephos can set you up on a server for tests. If you don’t have multiplayer, we have a few tricks up our sleeves.

        • Honeydew says:

Yes, Xephos and the producers were looking for a new character, it’s not really skill, but just constantly being with us, and you will probably be quickly realized in the world of Minecraft, Xephos claims Yogscast is pretty big. Alright now I’m dwarf’n it up.

However, I’m not to good with computers, and I was wondering if you could set me up my own server to fuck around on without anyone (well maybe you, or whoever gets accepted). Lewis doesn’t have the time, or the gas to come down. Also he always is the one that get multiplayer set up.

Oh and I no longer have premium, unless I go to lewis’s home. I am so lost on the Hamachi thing.

          • Hey Honeydew…I thought that series was over but would be happy to join if it continues. And I hope you pick me, send me an e-mail (srry but i can only do videos on weekends mostly, hope that doesn’t make me unavalible). If I get picked you guys can pick meh skin and I’ll hopefully breaze through the “training”, e-mail the IP to me too. I’m a “big” fan and hope you continue the the series with or without me. Just have fun ;)

I really do enjoy your videos and would love to help you with creating the server, I am skilled in these things and this way of creating a server looks simple enough, my only question is do you want to use a computer of your own, or do you want for me to use a computer (really looking forward to building a computer) thanks

Is this server file for the new minecraft beta or for the free version of minecraft? (multiplayer survival would be awsome! :D )

  3. Kee says:

I’ve can’t seem to find the ‘server’ files that you’re supposed to have after extraction.. I have a file name ‘minecraft-server’, but when I open it with notepad, it isn’t blank, but filled with stuff like:

    ‘PK ƒz‹;MrÎ*ï ¯ com/mojang/a/a.class…V \åÿì1ìðA–å’

I can’t make any sense of it, so do you know what I’m doing wrong? Thanks in advance~ :D

this is for everyone who cant seem to get their minecraft server to work.

1st go to minecraft.net and find the download button.

2nd download the 2nd last file there.

3rd save it as an .EXE file.

once you have it downloaded it, make a new folder. name it “server” or anything you want.

put the .exe file into the folder.

    run it.

My in game name is nxtgenius so everyone knows!

  11. Godfire173 says:

I need some help. So, one day, I decided to make a server. I made one, but it glitched, so I deleted the files. However, somehow, the server seems to be haunting my IP, so I can’t make another server (This IP is being used already!). How do I get rid of it?

    • mickey says:

i figured out how to download it, which was what my original problem was, all was going smooth until i read the “click start server” part. mmm. any help?
