How to Set Up a Minecraft Server

Setting up a server might seem daunting to scary, but with these easy-to-follow instructions, it’s a snap!

1. Download the Minecraft server .zip file and extract it to your desktop.

2. Go to your desktop and open the minecraft-server folder.

3. Now you’ll see a bunch of files. There should be 2 files called server. Open one of them. If you can’t open the file, select ‘Notepad’ from the window that pops up. If this file is blank, open the other server file.

4. Find the line that says port=xxx, which is normally set to 25565. Go to here and find your router model for a step-by-step guide to forward the port. If you do not forward the port, others will not be able to join your server.

Name Your Server and Set Message of the Day

5. To name your server, change the name after server-name=. This is what will appear on the public server list.

To change the Message of the Day, change the text after motd=. This is what will appear when players connect to your server.

To change the amount of players allowed, change the number after max-players=. This number is how many players (including you) can be in the server at one time.

6. Save and close the server file. Noe open the admins file. Add your in-game name to this so that you can be an admin and have special abilities to kick players and so forth. You need to one one admin per line.

7. If you want to ban any IP addresses, copy and paste them into the banned-ip file. Banned IPs must have a / before each entry. For banlists, each name or IP must be on its own line. Save and close the banned and banned-ip files.

8. Click start server to launch the server. A black command window should pop up, and soon it should display information such as the external URL. Once it shows the external URL, you can join your server through the URL in the command window (or the externalurl file) or by clicking it in the public server list.

9. To close your server, simply exit out of the black command window. The map is saved automatically, so you don’t need to use the save button in the in-game menu.

Updating Your Server

After an update, you should update your server to the latest version. Go back and download the Minecraft server .zip file and extract it. Then drag and drop the minecraft-server and server files (don’t drag and drop the chat log file) into your folder. You’ll have to update the name of your server and message of the day again.

Hmm, that’s a hard one. Since I haven’t had that problem, I’m not sure what to do to fix it. I’ll look into this and try to see if there is a solution.

    • Alume says:

that problem is related to your browser and your OS settings

2 ways of clearing the problem i suggest u try them both if it doesnt work say it

      1. clean pc cache/cookies/browserdata also set your pc time correctly (i have seen it happen several times the pc time somehow screws with IE7+)
to do this use command run and type
      ipconfig /flushdns
this will remove any blockaded info in your pc memory
next open your browser and clear the cache/cookies's-Cache will give u all the details about each version of browser and how to clear it

      2. install a different browser and try again
i assume your working on a 64 bit windows so if not the wiki link can give you a hint for other browsers
Recommended is Palemoon (firefox link off that uses 64bit instructions properly)
or Opera 12 (this is still a beta so )

    @ minecraft sandbox

could you add an optional function to start the server on that guide of this page ?
normally when a server is started its started with Java -Xms512M and -Xmx512M and no cleaning set
basically when u hit minecraft_server.exe your server will have 512mb ram available for java and all the players

and a risk of getting errors due to no file cleaning
(i ran into it several times with running servers on alot of different pcs
and both options of playing online and online with offline mode)

starting the server trough a batch file fixes this by making it start with

    @echo off
    java -Xmn256M -Xms2048M -Xmx2048M -jar minecraft_server.exe

the Xmn is the clearing set wich cleans up the mess made by the minecraft server

making a batch file is just opening notepad.exe and typing that line hit Save and save it as minecraft_server.bat
place the .bat file next to minecraft_server.exe and use it to start the program

this will force minecraft_server.exe to run with 2 gigs of memory available(read available when needed but not directly in use) in Java and a cleaning set
ofc this can be altered to make it 1 gig aswell but i wouldn’t suggest going lower then that if u want to run a proper server
